Vettel fights back to deny Verstappen Mexican GP pole

Sebastian Vettel stormed to his 50th Formula 1 pole position in qualifying for the Mexican Grand Prix with a stunning Q3 lap that denied Max Verstappen the opportunity to become the youngest pole-sitter in the sport's history. Verstappen looked poised to charge to his maiden F1 pole on Saturday after leading title contenders Vettel and Lewis Hamilton after the first runs in Q3, only to fluff his lines on the final lap and fail to improve. Vettel was able to take full advantage of Verstappen's slow final effort, turning in a fastest lap time of 1:16.488 to finish 0.086 seconds clear of his Red Bull rival in the dying moments of Q3, moving onto a half-century of poles in F1.
