McLaren could build own engines from 2021

Fernando Alonso's McLaren McLaren may build its own engines when new Formula 1 regulations take effect in 2021, but only if costs fall significantly. McLaren is still hoping to swap from Honda to Renault powerplants in 2018, but could bring engines inhouse in future seasons. Zak Brown believes that there will be major upheaval in the engine market when the current rules finish. “We’re interested to see what the new engine formula is in 2021 – and whether we consider doing our own engine, or whether other people would come in under new rules,” said the McLaren executive director. “So right now we’ve got to focus on the next three years and, as soon as we get that figured out,...
