Maldonado, Sainz suffer strange Bahrain penalties
Both Pastor Maldonado and Carlos Sainz Jr suffered penalties during the Bahrain Grand Prix, but neither for offences usually seen. Sainz was handed a five-second penalty before the race even began after the Scuderia Toro Rosso driver was found to have driven too slowly on the reconnaissance laps heading to the grid. The FIA set a maximum of time of 2m02.0s to get around to the grid ahead of the race, but the Spaniard set a lap time of 2m16.664s, and therefore earned his penalty. Lotus F1 Team driver Maldonado was also handed a five-second penalty after starting from the wrong grid spot on the grid.
