F1: Round 1 to Mercedes
Shakedown stats suggest that Mercedes has reacted best to rules overhaul. While Ferrari might walk away feeling confident, Lewis Hamilton having posted the fastest time of the 5-day 'test', Mercedes clearly rules the roost. Quite simply, as we know nothing about fuel loads, tyre compounds or pretty much anything else - including the fact that most teams saw no point in such so-called glory runs - Hamilton's time, good as it was, albeit 4.802s off Oscar Piastri's 2025 pole-winning time, didn't really prove anything. On the other hand, is the fact that over its three days of testing Mercedes completed 502 laps, almost eight race distances, while its nearest rival (Ferrari) completed 440...
